    UK Garage claims to be the first sample CD dedicated specifically to this
    sub-genre of dance, and is also volume 3 in Beatnik Modular Samplerseries.

    As with the other releases in the range, UK Garagecontains two discs: one
    56-minute audio CD, and another featuring all of the sounds as both WAV
    files and what are termed Blueprint MIDI files - complete GM-compatible
    sequences for all of the loops and phrases. We start with a handful of
    construction kit tracks, lasting between 30 and 40 seconds each, which are
    then deconstructed into their individual parts. Interestingly enough,
    only the basic construction elements are given, thankfully leaving out
    the obligatory 26 versions of the 909 kick drum.

    What it does provide, though, is a fairly wide pallette of sounds within
    the loops is provided, ranging from odd vocal effects and horn-section
    samples to some fat and very rich analogue bass sounds.

    Following on from the full construction kits, there are a good number of
    dedicated drum loop kits, with mix-outs and variations, and an open-minded
    approach to percussion, featuring some more unusual bongo, shaker and
    effect sounds.

    The familiar garage trademark - grindy lo-fi organ - gets a good airing
    on track 33, with a selection of nicely structured phrases and licks,
    whilst tracks 38 to 45 concentrate more on bass sounds, offering both
    phrases and multisamples. The bass sounds are mainly analogue in origin,
    and sizzle with warmth and character, as do the Acid lines (tracks 46-48
    ) which are short, sharp Minimoog/TB303 phrases and effects with some
    nicely subtle delay to complement the wonderfully excessive use of the
    filter resonance and cutoff knobs.

    The tail end of the release sports a usable collection of pads, drones
    and menacing synthetic sweepers, as well as some twisted and far-out sax
    samples. A few odd sound effects, a sprinkling of single-hit drum samples
    and a naff (but mercifully short) vocal section brings UK Garageto a
    close. With a specialist release such as this, sample CD producers always
    tread a fine line between making their products widely accessible and
    keeping a tight focus on their chosen production style. UK Garageachieves
    this rather well, never flinching from its subject matter - upbeat, often
    camp thumping music to dance round your handbag to.
